Both the CX-90 and the EX90 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The Mazda CX-90 has achieved the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest rating of “Top Safety Pick Plus” for the 2025 model year. This distinction is based on its exceptional performance in IIHS’ rigorous battery of safety tests. Specifically, it earned a “Good” rating in the latest, more stringent moderate overlap front crash test, a “Good” result in the updated side impact test, and a “Good” score in the revised pedestrian crash prevention test. The EX90 has not yet been evaluated by the IIHS for 2025.

Mazda’s powertrain warranty covers the CX-90 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Volvo covers the EX90. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the EX90 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are almost 2 times as many Mazda dealers as there are Volvo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the CX-90’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Mazda vehicles are better in initial quality than Volvo vehicles. With 10 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Mazda higher than Volvo.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2025 Auto Issue reports that Mazda vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Mazda 9 places higher in reliability than Volvo.

The CX-90 PHEV’s maximum EPA estimated range on a full tank and a full charge is 526 miles, after which it can be refueled at any gas station in minutes. The EX90’s range is only 300 to 310 miles, after which the minimum time to recharge is 30 minutes for only an 80% charge at a specially configured quick charge station not available in most areas. A full recharge at a professionally installed 220-volt charging station can take up to 10 hours.

The CX-90’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the EX90 are solid, not vented.

For better traction, the CX-90 has larger standard tires than the EX90 (265/55R19 vs. 255/50R20). The CX-90 Premium/Turbo S’ tires are larger than the largest tires available on the EX90 (275/45R21 vs. 265/45R21).

The CX-90 has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the EX90; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the CX-90’s wheelbase is 5.3 inches longer than on the EX90 (122.8 inches vs. 117.5 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the CX-90 is 1.2 inches wider in the front and 1.6 inches wider in the rear than on the EX90.

For better maneuverability, the CX-90’s turning circle is .7 feet tighter than the EX90’s (38.1 feet vs. 38.8 feet).

The Mazda CX-90 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 950 to 1500 pounds less than the Volvo EX90.

Maximum trailer towing in the Volvo EX90 is limited to 4850 pounds. The CX-90 offers up to a 5000 lbs. towing capacity.

The CX-90’s power mirror controls are mounted on the armrest for easy access. The EX90’s power mirror controls are embedded in the infotainment system, seriously distracting drivers who have to adjust them while driving.

The CX-90 Premium Plus/Turbo S has standard front air conditioned seats and the CX-90 Turbo S Premium Plus also has them in the second row. This keeps the passengers comfortable and takes the sting out of hot seats in summer. The EX90 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats for the second row.

The CX-90 Premium Plus has a 115-volt a/c outlet in the cargo area, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The EX90 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.
